Died: August 28, 1958

Abraham Aaron Louis Blumenthal (in various records as Abraham, A.A. or Louis) appeared simply as Louis in the 1900 Leadville City Directory as a clerk at the Freedheim Brother’s clothing store. [4] Louis probably spent his early life in his birth state of Pennsylvania, before migrating west to Leadville at the turn of the 20th century while in his mid-twenties. His parents, Raphael Blumenthal and Jetta Pearlstein, were immigrants from Russia and are buried in a Jewish cemetery outside Los Angles. [5]

1900 is the only attestable year in which Louis was present in Leadville. His residence was not listed in the Leadville directory, but the 1900 United States Census listed him as “A. A. L. Blumenthal” with the profession of clothing store clerk. That year, his residence was a boarding house at 139 West 7th Street; he was listed as 26 years old and born in Pennsylvania. [6] The boarding house in which he was a resident was operated by Mrs. Doyle and housed 24 boarders in their 20s and early 30s. An interesting cross section of professions was listed among the boarders, including dry goods and grocery clerks, telegraph operators, a mining engineer, a pharmacist, railroad firemen, and several waiters. Young men often lived in shared living spaces in such Victorian boarding houses; while the majority were young men, there were two female boarders listed. All the boarders at Mrs. Doyle’s boarding house in the summer of 1900 were American born. After inspection of the other boarder’s names, Louis was likely one of the only Jewish residents. A photograph of the dining room and parlor of the boarding house can be found in the 1895 magazine, “Leadville, Lake County and the Gold Belt”.

In February of 1900, Louis attended a party for his future wife Augusta Ahrens and her cousin Amelia at East Turner Hall; suggesting strong German connections. [7] Augusta was born in 1877 in Texas and was the daughter of German immigrants; probably members of the Texas German migration of the late 19th century. It is unclear if her family were Jewish; her parents were buried in an unaffiliated section of Der Stadt Friedhof cemetery outside Fredericksburg, Texas. [8]

In 1900, Augusta lived in Leadville and was listed as a domestic servant in the Hahnerwald household at 208 East 3rd Street, but did not appear in the city directory. [9] A potential connection to Leadville is Herman Ahrens, an well-known oil dealer, fur trapper, and Leadville pioneer from Germany [10] ; who may have been Augusta’s uncle. [11] Augusta and Louis were married in Glenwood Springs on July 1, 1900. [12] It is unclear when they left Leadville; neither Louis nor Augusta appear in Leadville city directories or social columns from 1901 or beyond.

By 1910, Louis and Augusta were in Cochise, Arizona, with children, Bessie and Aron. Louis was still listed as a dry goods salesman and the children were 6 and 3 years of age that year. [13] While it is unclear if Augusta was Jewish, her son Aron Charlie Blumenthal is buried in a Jewish section of the Temple Beth El Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. [14] Their daughter Bessie, married Louis Goethel, a Christian. [15] The children were born after Augusta and Louis departed Leadville.
