Henry Feuerstein and his wife Catherine immigrated to the United States from Wuttemberg, Germany in 1852. [1] It is not certain when they arrived in Denver, Colorado, but no records can be found that establish them in another U.S. city between 1852 and 1883. Henry and Catherine had their challenges with the high infant mortality rates of the period, losing two sons, both under two years of age. [2] Of the three children born to the couple, only the eldest, Caroline, survived to adulthood. [3]

Henry was an officer of Denver’s first Freemason lodge [4] and a restaurateur/saloonkeeper by trade. [5] He arrived in Leadville in 1883 and has no occupation listed in the directory for that year. [6] He was listed as a bookkeeper for an undisclosed firm in the1884 city directory. [7] Given his affinity for proprietorship, Henry owned a small series of saloons and restaurants in Denver, Littleton, Aurora and Aspen, Colorado throughout his life. It is quite possible Henry was in Leadville scouting locations to expand his business. Although he did not open a location in Leadville, he did eventually open new locations in Aspen [8] and in the Denver area after his departure.

Henry suffered with a debilitating, undisclosed illness around the turn of the twentieth century, [9] that lingered the rest of his life and was severe enough that he began to transfer property to his daughter, Caroline Goodale in 1913. [10] Henry did manage his health well enough to maintain his popular saloons until his death in 1917. [11] The family and Caroline’s husband, Ellis, are interred at Fairmount Cemetery in the Feuerstein family plot. [12]
