Joe Fleissner [1] first arrived in Leadville sometime in 1883, and took a position as a clerk with the Sands, Pelton & Co. clothing store. [2] It is not entirely clear if the family came with him on this trip. Joe had immigrated to the United States from Hungary in 1869 [3] when he was somewhere between the ages of 15 and 19. [4] He originally settled in Ramsey County, Minnesota. From there he and his family, wife Rika [5] and infant son Herbert, [6] moved back to Leadville by 1886, moved again to Aspen, Colorado, in 1889, [7] and after a brief stay there returned to Minnesota for good sometime between April [8] and December of 1890. [9]
Initially, it appears that Joe came to Colorado on his own, perhaps prospecting for business opportunities. He appears in the 1883 city directory as a clerk for Sands & Pelton, and is not seen again in Leadville until 1886 when he is listed as manager of The Clipper saloon and lunch counter located at 406 Harrison Avenue, and sharing a residence with brother-in-law Sigmund Simon. [10] In 1887, they were both co-managing The Clipper [11] and were joint proprietors of the establishment by 1888. [12]
Although it is unclear if his first wife Rika, and their son, Herbert, were with Joe in 1883, but most certainly returned with him in 1886 as their daughter, Stella, was born in Leadville in 1887. [13] The Fleissner family would only stay in Leadville for a brief time. Joe ceded his interest in the Clipper to Sigmund by the end of 1888, then worked briefly as a clerk at the Harris and Meyers clothing store [14] before moving on to Aspen to open a new version of The Clipper there in 1889. [15] The family’s time in Aspen was also short-lived, returning to Minnesota [16] before the birth of their youngest daughter, Gertrude, in December of 1890. [17]
1 There are several variations of this name in various Leadville and other US resources. With the combination of family members, and relative events it can be established that the correct spelling of the head of this family is Joseph N. Fleissner, or the German; Fleißner, which is typically translated into the English alphabet as “SS”.
