Anthony Hart was a longtime resident of Leadville. He arrived in 1879, found a room with the Barton household at 143 East 8th, and went to work at the Chicago Planing Mill as a carpenter. [1] There are few records that tell of Anthony’s time in Leadville and even fewer that explain his life before or after his sojourn there. However, it does appear that he was somewhat active within the local Jewish community, participating in the B’nai B’rith organizational banquet on November 9, 1879. [2]
In 1881, Anthony left his position at the Chicago Planing Mill and went to work for the firm of Barton & Leonard in the same capacity as a carpenter. [3] He served there and boarded with the Leonard family for several years before taking a foreman’s position with the Harrison Reduction Works in 1883, [4] where he remained for the duration of his tenure in Leadville. In 1892 he was promoted to General Foreman, [5] and began to show up more often in the social columns having attended occasional private parties.
Little is known of what became of Anthony after leaving Leadville, but evidence supports the possibility that he moved from Leadville to Denver in 1893 where he later married. There is a mention in the personal columns that notes of an inquiry made by his sister in 1895 who was attempting to locate Anthony, whom she had not heard from in some time. [6]

There he worked as a cigar maker for an unknown firm and lived at 108 Harrison Avenue. [8] He is listed as one of the guests present at the M.D. Altman-Rosa Schloss wedding in January of 1881, [9] but no other records can be found for Alexander Hart before or after his time in Leadville.

Elick Hart arrived in Leadville sometime during the year of 1879. He then partnered with M.W. Samuels in the cigar and tobacco firm of Samuels & Hart located at 32 ½ Harrison Avenue, where he also resided. [10] The following year Elick dissolved his partnership with Samuels and moved to 326 Harrison Avenue. He is listed in the city directory living and conducting business as a cigar maker at that address. [11]
During Elick’s brief time in Leadville he did participate in the occasional social function, the most notable example was co-driving the sleigh along with Joseph Londoner and T.J. Sweeny during the local New Year’s celebration in 1880. [12] Elick also served as a private in the local Sherfey Light Infantry Division of the United States Army. [13]
In 1881, Elick changed addresses again moving to 404 Harrison Avenue, [14] he remained at this address briefly and this was his last known residence and place of business in Leadville.
Morris and Eleazer Hart arrived in Leadville in 1881. Both initially resided at 326 Harrison Avenue. The two worked at Elick’s cigar shop, taking up residence and business in Elick’s original storefront at 326 Harrison Avenue. [15] It is likely that Elick, Eleazer and Morris Hart were related but there is no evidence to confirm the specifics of those relationships. In the latter part 1881 Morris took over as proprietor of the original establishment, renamed it Famous Cigar and began serving liquor in addition to dealing in cigars and tobacco. To commemorate the event Morris held a dice-throwing contest in which the winner was awarded an elegant four-tube hookah. [16] Morris also served alongside Elick as a private in the Sherfey Light Infantry. [17]
Though brief, Morris Hart’s time in Leadville did not pass without controversy; by the early part of 1882 his business was in serious debt. To cure this, Morris sold the storefront to Wolf & Shayer during the summer of the same year. However, this not did satisfy Morris Hart’s creditors and within days of the sale he admitted that his intention was to saddle Julius Wolf and Adolph Schayer with his business debts, which were intentionally hidden at the time of the sale. [18] It is unclear whether or not this admission played a part in returning responsibility for the businesses debts to Morris Hart but it does appear that Wolf & Schayer were not required to cure them. [19] Morris left Leadville shortly after the sale, however for several years following his departure creditors were still in the Leadville courts trying to recover the delinquent payments. [20] Eleazer appears to have left Leadville shortly after transferring ownership to Morris. Eleazer and Morris both appear to have left town sometime in the latter part of 1882.
