Morris Hein was born on September 12, 1921 in New York. [1] He moved to Leadville with his mother, Mollie Hein sometime in the 1930s. Mollie married William Zelinkoff on August 22,1936 in Leadville. [2] Morris attended Leadville High School in the years 1936 [3] and 1937. [4]
Morris and his family left Leadville and moved to Minturn, Colorado, where he worked as a laborer. [5] By 1941 Morris was attending the University of Denver.
Morris passed away on November 30, 2013 in Yorba Linda, California. His obituary, below, was published in the Intermountain Jewish News on March 5, 2015.
Morris Hein
Dr. Morris Hein, who was raised in Denver’s Sheltering Home for Jewish Children, passed away Nov. 30, 2013, in Yorba Linda, CA. The graveside service was held Dec. 4, 2013 at Rose Hill Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
Morris was a self-made man who had an innate curiosity for knowledge and a drive toward perfection, the family said. Dedicated to his family, friends and students, he loved the Colorado Rockies and was an expert fly fisherman.
Dr. Hein was born Sept. 12, 1921, in New York City. He attended Lake Junior High and Leadville High School, earned his BS and MS in chemistry at DU and a PhD in chemistry at CU.
During WW II, he served in the US Navy from 1944-1946.
Dr. Hein married Edna Duman Hein on Nov. 18, 1944, in San Francisco, Calif. They were together for 64 years. Mrs. Hein passed away on Dec. 31, 2008.
A renowned author of college chemistry textbooks, Dr. Hein was a chemistry professor and department chair at Mt. San Antonio College in California and a research chemist. He retired in July, 1983.
Founder of the world’s first Reconstructionist chavurah, he was the founder of Beth Shalom in Whittier, California, and a life member of Bnai Brith [B’nai B’rith].
He was a charter member of the American Chemical Society, Manufacturing Chemists Assn. and the scientific advisory board officer of the Southern California Air Pollution Control District.
Dr. Hein was honored by the University of Judaism, American Chemical Society, and received the Outstanding College Chemistry Teacher award in 1977.
A terrific bowler, he also was an exceptional fly fisherman.
Dr. Hein is survived by his children Leslye J. (Samuel) Prum of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Steven A. (Diana) Hein of Sedona, Ariz.; grandsons Darren (Andra) Prum, Jory Prum and Shanon Prum; great-grandchildren Dillan and Amber Prum; and siblings Phyllis Zelinkoff (Russ) Hart and Ronald Zelinkoff of Denver.
