Julius B. Ikelheimer
Occupation: Grocer
Born: Est. 1863
Birthplace: Louisiana
Died: December 9, 1947

Julius B. Ikelheimer is estimated to have been born in Louisiana in 1863 [1] to Rosetta Siegel Ikelheimer, [2] a Germany immigrant, and Gustav Ikelheimer whose birthplace is unknown. [3] Prior to his arrival in Leadville, Julius and his family moved in with the family of Gabriel and Louis Siegel of New York City. [4] Gustav had died sometime prior to 1880 and Louis and Gabriel were Rosetta’s brothers. [5] The death of Gustav likely precipitated the Ikelheimer family moving in with the Siegels. Julius’ relationship with Louis Siegel, as his nephew, was the major impetus for his move to Leadville.

Julius arrived in Leadville by 1880, likely at the behest of his uncle. [6] Louis was the owner of a profitable champagne factory in New York but wanted to expand his business. [7] He sought to open a distribution branch in Leadville, partnering with Adolph and Henry Kern [8] and sending Julius to the city to work at the new business. [9] Located at 519 Harrison Avenue, the store, Siegel, Kern & Co., did not exclusively sell Siegel champagne, but also sold a variety of groceries. Julius’ position at the business is not listed in Leadville’s city directories, nor is he mentioned in a short “history” of Siegel, Kern & Co. published in the Leadville Weekly Democrat. [10]

Julius lived at 519 Harrison Avenue while in Leadville, the same address as the grocery store. [11] Unlike his co-workers, Adolph and Henry Kern, Julius was hardly in the public spotlight. He was listed in a single guest list alongside the Kerns for the one year anniversary celebration of Rocky Mountain Lodge 322, Independent Order of B’nai B’rith in November 1880. [12]

Julius remained in Leadville until 1883, the final year he and Siegel, Kern & Co. were reported in the city directories. [13] Whether the business failed or was simply dissolved is not known. Julius returned to New York where he resided for the remainder of his life. He died in Manhattan on December 9, 1947 at the age of 84. [14]
