Martha Kaliski
Born: Germany, June, 1877
Died: Chicago, 1907

Martha Kaliski was born in Germany in June of 1877 to Helen and Max Kaliski. She, her parents, and sister Pauline immigrated to the United States in 1882 [1] and resided in Denver at 58 16th Street. [2]

Martha left her family home in Denver at age 18 and came alone to Leadville briefly. She wasted little time acquainting herself with the Jewish community. Dr. David Heimberger, [3] with whom she resided in his home at 130 West 4th Street [4] , likely introduced her to the Jewish community. Martha worked as a stenographer for W. L. Thompson, an insurance agent located at 104 West 4th Street (P224). [5] Her work and residence, located just a block away from Temple Israel, made it convenient for her to attend a speech given on behalf of the National Council of Jewish Women by Sadie American [6] at Temple Israel on July 27, 1895. [7]

What became of Martha after her departure from Leadville probably around 1896 is somewhat mysterious, as was her relationship to the Heimberger family. There is no listing for the Kaliski family in Denver city directories after 1895, and it is probable the entire family moved to Chicago at that time, when they all lived at same residence in 1900. [8] During this period Martha was still working as a stenographer for her father Max’s insurance agency. [9] She died of unknown causes there in June of 1907, [10] at the age of 30.
