Henry Kline
Born: Germany, 1835
Died: April 10, 1894

Sarah Kline
Born: Illinois, 1835
Died: Belden, CA, 1925

Joseph Kline
Born: 1833
Died:

John Kline
Born: Pennsylvania, 1843
Died: Leadville, 1901

Julius Kline
Born: Denver, Colorado, 1864
Died: Chicago, IL. January 25, 1922

Records for the brothers John, Henry, Joseph and Julius Kline are somewhat sparse. The earliest records of their origin are of Henry, who served as a Major in the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry Company F, [1] although it is unclear if this service included Civil War action. [2]

The first appearance of the Kline brothers are in the 1880 United States Census and shows Joseph, Julius and Henry boarding at 100 East Chestnut, [3] and John next door at 102 East Chestnut [4] and indicates that they arrived from Pennsylvania. Henry was the proprietor for Leopold & Kline, a general goods store that advertised it to be sellers of gold, jewelry and toys while also serving as an auction house. The name “Leopold” cannot be found in the city directories during the store’s operation that suggests that the name was either a fabrication or a partner of Henry’s that lived elsewhere. Similarly, in 1886 the business moniker changed to D. Kline, [5] although there is no resource that explains what the “D.” in that name represents. Sarah, wife of Henry, does not appear in the 1880 United States Census, but must have arrived in Leadville shortly after the data was recorded as she was the complainant in a case involving two Texas miners who ate at her restaurant at 144 East Chestnut Street [6] and then refused to pay. [7] The restaurant appears to have ceased operations sometime before the Spring of 1881. [8]

John and Julius worked as salesmen for Henry’s operation while Joseph was a laborer at the Arkansas Valley Smelter. [9] Advertisements for the Kline store begin to appear in newspapers in 1880 and continue throughout Henry’s tenure in Leadville but never surface in city directories, which is not uncommon.

In 1887, the brothers appeared in the city directory living under the same roof for the first time at 138 ½ West Fifth Street. [10] Henry was now serving in the position as manager of Diamond & Jewelry Parlors located at 410 Harrison Avenue. [11] He left Leadville for Platteville, Colorado, shortly afterwards where he died in 1894 of unknown causes and was buried at Mitzpah Cemetery. Henry was married to Sarah who died in California in 1925. Her remains were transported back to Platteville, Colorado, for burial alongside her late husband. [12]

By 1899, Julius had left to serve in Cuba with the United States Marines holding the rank of sergeant. [13] Julius and John continued to live in Leadville at 210 West 5th Street. [14] Joseph continued to work as a laborer for the Arkansas Valley Smelter as he had since arriving in Leadville. [15]

On August 24, 1901, John died in Leadville of unknown causes, [16] and Joseph disappears from records sometime between 1903 and 1905. Julius remained with the Marines for the rest of his life and died in Chicago on January 25, 1922. Following his death, two wives appeared; Fannie Kline of Illinois and Eva Kline of Pennsylvania, both of whom filed claims for his pension which the United States Veterans Administration honored. [17] There are no records of divorce from either woman, and no indication as to any claims of bigamy against Julius Kline.

Frank Kline
Born: 1850
Died:

Adline (Shoenberg) Kline
Born: Missouri, 1858
Died:

Frank Kline arrived in Leadville some time in late 1879. He soon found a position as a clerk for Wolf Londoner and a residence at 214 East 3rd Street. [18] Records for Frank Kline are scarce at best, but what can be determined is that he established relationships with some of the more notable Temple Israel congregants. He married the daughter of Moses Shoenberg, [19] Adline, [20] sometime between 1885 and 1887, though records of the wedding have not been located at this time. Despite these relationships he split his time between Leadville and Denver, working mostly unskilled labor [21] and clerk jobs and establishing a specific vocation at none of them.

Adline and Frank disappear from area records after 1887, with the exception of Frank’s appearance at the funeral of M.J. Murray on May 21, 1901 as a pall-bearer. [22] There are some interesting discrepancies in the records regarding Frank and Adeline, who were likely divorced at some point as Adeline is shown to have married Morris Rosenberg in Pitkin County, Co. in 1898. [23]

Jacob Kline
Born:
Died:

Jacob Kline first appears in Leadville as a miner residing at 210 East 12th Street. [24] Little information on Jacob can be found, but he did attend the Purim Bal Masque on March 1, 1884. [25] Jacob is shown to have worked as a cook for the Tabor Grand Hotel while residing at Harrison and 7th Street in 1885, [26] but disappears from the city directories after that.

Marcus Kline
Born: 1832
Died: Leadville, CO. February 10, 1922.

Nellie Kline
Born:
Died:

Marcus came to Leadville with his wife, Nellie, and established a cigar store under the name of M. Kline in 1879, though no address for the establishment can be found. [27] His career as a tobacconist was short lived as he does not appear in the city directory in 1880, and only a residential address at 112 East Chestnut is listed for the couple in 1881. [28] By 1882, Marcus began to drift trough clerk positions for various retail operations beginning with the Herman Brothers, [29] and later for M. Harris’ clothing store in 1883. [30]

Marcus and Nellie were long time residents of Leadville and did occasionally appear in the social and personal columns. March, 1883, was a busy time for Marcus in relation to appearances about town, serving as a juror for the Quakenbush trial. [31] The couple also attended the dinner in honor of the Jewish men indicted in the Palace of Fashion Fire on March 21, 1883, to celebrate their acquittal. [32] Marcus was also a member of the local chapter of the Knights of Pythias. [33] In 1884, the couple moved their home to 218 Harrison Avenue. [34]

Marcus continued to work for the M. Harris firm until 1888 and moved his residence to 215½ Harrison Avenue. [35] Marcus left his position with Harris in 1889 in a lateral move to the American House [36] and moved his home again to 125 West 2nd Street [37] where he remained for several years. [38]

In 1899 the city directory shows Marcus moving again to 209 West Chestnut, [39] with no occupation listed. This could be indicative of Marcus’ employment status at the time and partially explain his arrest in September for vagrancy and petty theft. It is likely that his longtime standing in the community invoked the courts sympathy as the charges were ultimately dismissed. [40]

In 1900 Marcus’ situation seemed to improve, finding residency at 409 West Chestnut [41] while working as a porter for the Sands firm. [42] His appearance in City directories and newspaper coverage becomes sporadic after this, but he appears to have remained at the same residence and company for the next five years. [43]

Marcus died in Leadville at the age of 92 on February 10, 1922. [44] Although the cause of his death is not recorded, it can be reasonably assumed that this was from natural causes given his advanced age. He was buried in the Leadville Hebrew Cemetery, [45] however the location of his gravesite cannot currently be accounted for as there are still a small number of graves there with no record of their resident. It is unclear what became of Nellie Kline as she seems to escape mention in newspapers and records after 1888.

Emma Kline
Born:
Died:

Emma Kline was the niece of Samuel and Bertha Berry. [46] Emma was a frequent visitor to Leadville but never a full time resident. She lived with her parents in Denver but would visit her aunt and uncle with relative frequency from 1890 to 1896 [47] and attended many community and Congregation Israel events over that period of time. [48] Emma was very active in Leadville in 1890 and 1891, attending a party in honor of Tillie Mayer, [49] the Purim Bal Masque [50] and the inaugural dance for the Alpha club [51] in the spring of 1890, along with the Hebrew Ladies Ball on June 4, 1891. [52] In 1894, Emma was elected a charter officer for the Leadville order of the Sisters of Pythias [53] and disappears from Leadville records shortly thereafter.
