Herman Kruemling [1] was born in Germany during 1847, and was the first of three brothers to arrive in Leadville sometime in early 1880. [2] He is listed in the city directory and in the United States Census as a bookkeeper for an unknown firm residing at 116 West 2nd Street. [3] The firm was likely the liquor distributorship of Jacob Schloss, [4] as he is shown again in 1881 working for Schloss as a porter. [5]
In 1882, Herman’s brothers Paul and Theodore arrived in Leadville; Herman working as a teamster, and Theodore as a clerk, both for the cigar and liquor concern of Morris Altman, [6] and Paul working as a porter for the tobacco and liquor enterprise owned by Julius Wolf [7] and Adolph Schayer. [8] Herman and Theodore roomed together while Paul took residence at the Wolf & Schayer storefront at 108 Harrison Avenue. [9]
Herman and Paul both left Leadville sometime by early 1883, Theodore remained in Leadville through 1883, working as a sampler for the Arkansas Valley Smelter [10] and had joined his brothers in Montrose, Colorado, by 1885, all three in the occupation of ranchers. [11]
Although it is unclear how soon the brothers began operating their own ranch, but records show large parcels of land purchased by Herman in 1903, [12] at nearby Hotchkiss, Colorado that ultimately became a successful ranch owned by the Kruemlings. [13]
It is unclear where or when Herman finished his life, but Paul died of unknown causes in Hotchkiss, Colorado during 1941. [14] Brother Theodore sold 80 acres of ranchland near Hotchkiss for the consideration of $1 on March 28, 1916, [15] and died in San Diego, California on July 3, 1946. [16]
