Albert Lewin
Born: Germany, 1859
Died: Denver, 1924

Albert Lewin immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1881 [1] and almost immediately made his way to Leadville. Upon his arrival he worked as a clerk for an unknown firm located at 121 ½ East Chestnut. [2] Soon Albert partnered with Louis Waldauer [3] in a cigar manufactory, Lewin & Waldhauer, at 114 East 3rd Street and took up residence across the street at 115 East 3rd Street. [4]

A large fire destroyed the cigar shop on November 1, 1883, [5] shortly after the partners moved the firm to a more lucrative location at 411 Harrison Avenue. It is likely that the conflagration prompted Albert’s move to Denver as within a week the store’s remaining stock was moved across the street to 412 Harrison Avenue and the enterprise advertised a massive liquidation sale stating that all goods must be sold in 30 days. [6] It is likely that Albert left town immediately after the sale as dead letter notices appear in the newspapers beginning in April of 1884. [7]

From Leadville Albert moved on to Denver where he partnered with Lesser Levy in a liquor distribution outlet [8] and married his sister, Mary. The couple ultimately parented nine children. [9] In 1908, Albert became the first manager of Lakeside Amusement Park, now an historic amusement park which still operates in the microscopic suburban Denver city of the same name and today boasts a total of eight residents. [10] Albert’s last will & testament notes that he was partnered in several active mining operations throughout Colorado, including the Mosquito Mine located near Leadville. [11]

Albert died of unknown causes at the age of sixty-five and rests, alongside wife Mary (1860-1929) and daughter Edna (1893-1964), at Denver’s Emmanuel Cemetery. [12]
