Samuel Mensch was a miner and laborer who lived in Leadville between 1882 and 1885, although, for unknown reasons, he did not appear in the 1883 Leadville city directory. In 1882, Samuel was listed as miner with a boarding house residence of 622 East 5th Street. The exact mine at which he was employed or any further information regarding his social life did not appear in contemporary newspaper columns. The following year, as noted above, he did not appear in city directories and his movements are unknown. In 1884, Samuel again appeared in the city directory as a laborer with a residence at 530 East 3rd. While he did not appear in the 1885 Leadville city directory, he did appear in the 1885 Colorado State census. He was enumerated as a 28-year-old miner and boarder at “270” with an unrecorded street name. His place of origin is smudged but can be interpreted as Pennsylvania. He lived with four other men between the ages of 19 and 37; one engineer and three miners.
Details of his further life and movements following Leadville were not found by this researcher. An individual by the name of Samuel Mensch was buried in a pauper’s grave in Denver’s Riverside Cemetery in 1906. While not verified to be the Samuel Mensch of this study due to lack of documentation and missing gravestone, timeframe and geography make the connection plausible.
