Samuel Mensch
Born: 1857
Died: 1906?
Married to: Unknown
In Leadville: 1882, 1884-1885
Samuel Mensch was a miner and laborer who lived in Leadville between 1882 and 1885, but did not appear in the 1883 Leadville city directory. In 1882, Samuel was listed as a miner living in a boarding house at 622 East 5th Street. [1] The exact mine where he worked and any further information regarding his social life were omitted in contemporary newspaper columns. The following year, as noted above, he did not appear in city directories, and his movements are unknown. [2] In 1884, Samuel again cropped up in the city directory as a laborer with a residence at 530 East 3rd. [3] Absent from the 1885 Leadville city directory, he resurfaced in the 1885 Colorado State census as a 28-year-old miner and boarder probably dwelling at a mine east of the City. Although his place of origin is smudged, it can be surmised as Pennsylvania. He lived with four other men between the ages of 19 and 37; one engineer and three miners. [4]
Details of his life after Leadville have eluded this researcher. An individual by the name of Samuel Mensch was buried in a pauper’s grave in Denver’s Riverside Cemetery in 1906. [5] While it’s uncertain whether this was the same Samuel Mensch in our study due to a paucity of documentation and a missing gravestone, chronology and locale suggest a plausible connection.
