Mr. Paul
Born: Unknown
Died: Unknown
Married to: Unknown
In Leadville: 1887
John Paul was listed as an attendee of a Simchas Torah banquet and concert in an October 1887 issue of The Herald Democrat. The event was attended by Leadville’s most prominent Jewish leaders, including David May, [1] Jacob Schloss, [2] Sam Mayer, [3] and Joe Shoenberg. [4] The reporter elaborated,
“An event that followed a period of solemnity among the Jewish citizens of this locality, was observed at City hall on Sunday afternoon, the spacious chamber having been especially prepared for the affair. The guests, which were confined to the members of the nationality of this city, began to assemble at an usually early hour, during which time a select orchestra was filling the room with appropriate music…”
The fact that the event was limited to “…. members of the nationality of this city…” indicates that Mr. Paul was most likely Jewish. [5]
John Paul’s exact identity is difficult to determine. “John Paul”, the most probable candidate, was listed as a resident of Leadville in the 1887 City Directory. John was listed as a clerk at Richard Dyer’s grocery store at 616 Harrison Avenue that year. [6] In 1886, an individual identified as “Elisha Paul” was listed as a miner with a residence of 612 Harrison Avenue. [7] However, this individual was an English immigrant and not Jewish. [8] The exact identity of Mr. Paul cannot be positively tied to John, and further information on the identity of this individual was not found by this researcher.
