Jacob Price appeared on the list of male attendees at the annual Purim Ball of 1889 at City Hall. [1] There was no “J.” Price listed in either the 1889 [2] or 1890 Leadville City Directory. [3] “J. Price” also was listed as an arrival at the Hotel Kitchen (today’s Tabor Grand) during the spring of 1890. [4] It is possible “J.” was a visitor to Leadville with some connection to the Jewish community, but his exact identity is unknown given the minimal information available. There were nine known Jewish men who had the initial “J” and the last name “Price” in the United States during this era. According to Jewish burial records, the most likely candidate from this pool would be Jacob Price, a metal merchant from St. Louis. [5] This Jacob Price owned several tracts of land on the Arkansas River south of Leadville [6] and had an address listed in the Denver area during the late 1880s. [7]
