Annie Schechter
Occupation: N/A
Born: ~1870
Birthplace: N/A
Died: June 21, 1894
The sole evidence for Annie Schechter’s presence in Leadville is her grave in the city’s Hebrew Cemetery. [1] The headstone simply states that she died on June 21, 1894, at the age of 24 which places her birthdate around 1870.
Though her origins are not clear, a Schechter family resided in St. Charles, Missouri in 1880, headed by Germany immigrants Fritz and Marie. [2] The couple had, among their numerous children, a daughter named Anna who was born in that state in 1870. Whether this is the same Annie Schechter buried in Leadville’s Hebrew Cemetery is not known, though it is a possibility. Several individuals with the surname Schechter were in Colorado in the 1890s, including an Ertz Schechter [3] and a Louis G. Schechter and family. [4] There is no evidence to suggest that Ertz, Louis, et al. ever came to Leadville so a connection between them and Annie is tenuous at best.
