Frank Spiegelman is mentioned only once as having some sort of presence in Leadville. According to an article found in the October 2, 1907 edition of Leadville’s Herald Democrat newspaper, Frank roomed with a man named Harry White in the Harwitz store and residence at 213 Harrison Avenue. [1] The article relates to a fire that damaged or destroyed numerous Jewish businesses and homes on Harrison Avenue, including the Harwitz, [2] Schloss, [3] Phillips, [4] and Flaks [5] family properties. Frank Spiegelman and Harry White both managed to escape the fire by jumping out the window of their room, but they did not escape injury. Frank injured his leg and his jaw, and Harry was “slightly injured internally.”
There are no further references to Frank in any local sources such as newspapers, city directories, or censuses. The absence of vital records during his apparently short time in Leadville means there is no way to trace his origins prior to arriving in the city or after departing it. The only Frank Spiegelman currently listed in the genealogical website Find a Grave died in 1950; no birth year is included. His grave, found in Philadelphia, points to a man whose residency never changed from Pennsylvania as evidenced by the reported birth years of his children in the 1910 US Census. [6] He is also the only individual in the census with this combination of given name and surname.
