Jasper Strepey
Born: Arkansas, 1852
Died: Pueblo, Colorado, December 2, 1910

Anna “Annie” Strepey
Born: 1857
Died: Leadville, December 16, 1887

George Strepey
Born: Glenwood Springs, Colorado, June 19, 1887
Died: Los Angeles, California, December 10, 1970

Jasper Strepey came to Leadville in 1881 where he took residence at 609 Alder Street and was listed in the occupation of cook. [1] It appears that his primary interest in Leadville was mining, but held various restaurant jobs to supplement his income throughout his tenure in Leadville. As a child, Jasper grew up in Arkansas, Missouri [2] and Kansas, the son of migrant farmer George Strepey I. [3] It is not known where he and future bride, Annie, met or married, but newspaper articles suggest he was in Leadville for several years as a bachelor. The Strepey’s appear sporadically in documents throughout Leadville’s history, and rarely appear in city directories but can be documented from 1881 to 1889, [4] 1893 [5] to 1908 with few gaps. No documents can be found placing the family outside of Leadville from 1881 through 1908, and thus it is likely that the family was in Leadville for that entire period.

In 1885 Jasper is shown residing at 212 West 3rd Street with no occupation listed. [6] Jasper attended the Oddfellows Ball on October 9, 1885. [7]

Annie Strepey died in Leadville of unknown causes on December 16, 1887. [8] It is unlikely that her death was related to childbirth, as George [9] would have been six months old at the time of her death. [10] Annie is interred at Leadville’s historic Hebrew Cemetery at Block C, Plot 16, Grave No. 3. [11]

There is little documentation of the Strepeys in Leadville between 1890 and 1898 although a court case in which a man named Stark unsuccessfully attempted to file a new claim for the Little Nell lode, which was owned by Jasper in 1893 is the most notable. [12] There is little activity before George appeared on the honor roll for the Ninth Street School on November 19, 1899. [13]

George again appeared on the honor Roll for the Ninth Street School on April 7, 1901. [14] He and Jasper were then living at 407 N. Poplar, and Jasper was employed at undisclosed restaurant. [15]

Japser and George are shown living at 109 Harrison Avenue and Jasper opened a restaurant under his name at the same location in 1902. [16] George attended Temple Israel’s Sunday school and was confirmed there on June 7. [17] George was one of 300 children who attended a masquerade ball at Richmond Hall in honor of George Washington’s birthday on February 22, 1902. [18] On February 15, 1903, George appeared on the honor roll for the Central School. [19]

Jasper was listed in the occupation of a miner while residing at 231 East 7th Street in 1907. [20] On April 24, Willie Green challenged George to a roller skating race at the Palace Roller Rink on West 5th Street as a preliminary to a contest between Leadville city champion Archie Loeb [21] and Utah state champion George Thompson. [22] There is no record of the winner in either contest.

On July 27, George became a charter member of Leadville’s T.B.S.C.A. club. There is no information that defines the acronym nor a description of the club’s purpose other than it being composed of “…boys over eighteen years of age…”. [23] On August 17, the club threw its first social event, at which most of the guests were young ladies. [24] On August 18, 1907, George took a trip to Denver with his friend Mason Gilbault. [25]

No records can be found for the family in Leadville during 1908, and Jasper reappears in the 1909 Pueblo City Directory working as a miner. [26] George likely left Leadville for Denver during this period.

1910 Jasper died of unknown causes in Pueblo, Colorado on October 2, 1910. His remains were returned to Eureka Springs, Arkansas where he was interred in the International Order of Oddfellows cemetery. [27] George married Rena Kooyan at Denver on December 3, 1910, and the couple likely left for a new home in Southern California soon after. [28]

Records show that George was married a minimum of four times. It is unknown what became of Rena, but the marriage license issued to George and Olive Williams at Santa Ana, California in 1938, notes that George was then divorced and that Olive would be his third wife. [29] That marriage too ended in divorce and George would marry again to Maud Ferguson on June 28, 1948, in Orange County, California. It was the fourth marriage for both bride and groom. [30] George died at Los Angeles on October 10, 1970, where he had been employed as a painter and decorator for an undisclosed aircraft manufacturer, a vocation he appears to have maintained for many decades. He is interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood. [31]
