Joseph Tobolowsky was born in Russia on September 16, 1860. There are few records elaborating on Tobolowsky’s time in Leadville or his activities before arriving.
Tobolowsky was a member of the Orthodox Jewish community in Leadville and was one of the original officers of the Kneseth Israel congregation. [1] Tobolowsky participated in the Kneseth Israel grand masquerade ball at Leadville’s City Hall on November 24, 1892. [2]
Tobolowsky married Sarah Cohen and together they had two daughters: Fannie and Lillie during the early 1880s. Tobolowsky passed away on August 6, 1937 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Sarah Tobolowsky later passed away on in Wichita Falls in 1942.

By 1890, many Orthodox Jews were increasingly dissatisfied with the lack of adherence to proper ritual and put forth the action to form their own congregation. On August 28, 1892, Orthodox Jews in Leadville formed Kneseth Israel. The congregation purchased an old Presbyterian Church located on 111 West 5th Street since there were too few members to build their own synagogue.
