Carolyn White
Born: Germany, 1862
Died: Leadville, Colorado, July 29, 1884
Carolyn White was born in Germany in 1862. [1] It is unclear when she immigrated to the United States, but she came to Leadville late in 1883 and opened a saloon under the name of C.L. White at 124 East Chestnut Street [2] where she also resided. [3] Julius Freshman ran a cigar stand and resided at the saloon as well. [4] As Carolyn was single and Julius disappears from Leadville records after her death [5] it is not unreasonable to speculate on the nature of their relationship. [6]
Unfortunately, Carolyn contracted an unknown disease that was listed only as “fever” in the amendment to the 1885 Colorado State Census. Carolyn died as a result of her condition. [7] She was interred briefly in the Leadville Hebrew Cemetery, but her remains were exhumed and shipped east to an undisclosed location on December 17, 1884. [8] A court case in which John Kramer was the plaintiff against Miss White was to be heard on September 1, 1884, but the case was dismissed due to her demise and the specifics of the complaint are unknown.
